What is a Jump Point? And How To Respond To Them


Jump PointA Jump Point is a point in time and space when you, as a person and/or a company, have the opportunity to dramatically expand your bandwidth and move to the next level.

Jump Point phenomena accompany Jump Points. Jump Point phenomena are a set of unique circumstances and resources that conspire to either catapult you forward or backwards. Either way, you and your business will never be the same.

Threshold for Disruption

The most common response to Jump Points is the fight, flight, freeze response. Everyone has their own individual threshold for disruption and everyone experiences the fight, flight, freeze response to some degree or other. When the level of disruption breaches your historic bandwidth, most people disengage. Fight/flight/freeze follows the disengagement trigger.

Disengagement is Natural

Disengagement is our body/mind’s way of informing us to pay particular attention to what is going on inside us. Take a step back, reframe the situation and learn how to use finesse, rather than force, to navigate. Disengagement is a natural phenomenon – it’s just a bit misunderstood at this point in time.

The most challenging thing about disengagement: fight/flight/freeze i.e. a Jump Point, is it’s paradoxical nature. The logic that preceded a Jump Point is different than the logic that dominates a Jump Point. A Jump Point is a really big opportunity (in disguise) to shift the way that you navigate.

Simple/complicated logic usually precedes a Jump Point. Complex/chaotic logic usually dominates a Jump Point. It is this intersection of complicated and complex that catapults you forward, or backward, depending on how you choose to navigate.

So What?

Restated in plain English, a Jump Point is a point in space and time when everything seems to be going to hell in a basket. Despite your best efforts, you have to consider that maybe you don’t control the universe. Maybe the universe, the economy, relationships and people are not rational. Maybe the best laid plans of mice and men …. don’t always cut it. You might even give consideration to the fact that you don’t know what you don’t know. And, you’d be right.

If you are considering that you don’t know what you don’t know, you are navigating a Jump Point (the other internal signals that distinguish Jump Points from incremental shifts is the high level of anxiety/fear/anger you may experience and/or the level of abandonment/betrayal/loneliness you may experience).

A 2008 Jump Point

I am reminded of the significant Jump Point that was the 2008 global financial meltdown.

My plans for our business growth and my personal objectives were thrown entirely out of the window in the space of a couple of months. At the time, nothing looked familiar. Every one of our client’s put their plans on hold. Our cash-flow dried up, just like almost everyone else in business at the time. In the developed world, every aspect of forward momentum ground to a halt.

Rather than stop, like everyone else, we chose to take action – any action, in as many new directions that we could imagine. We chose to test new approaches, probe for hints of opportunity in every new nook and cranny that we could think of. We consistently checked our intuition before, during and after absolutely every decision we made. In hindsight, 2008 was the single biggest boost to our business prospects and personal net worth.

Transformational Change

Jump Points are transformational. Transformational changes in the global economy, coupled with the influence of technology on the speed of change are going to trigger an environment where Jump Points become the norm. Mastering this new business reality is no longer an option, it is mission critical.

Recognizing a Jump Point as an opportunity is the first step in mastery.
